    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • During my time at IBM I have been focused on client work. Within this I maintain a Master Resource List for all the current projects going on, this involves keeping up to date with any resource turnover, make changes and updates to any start / end dates when required. A large part of my role is also the on / offboarding resources when joining or leaving the project.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed a number of skills I already had a base in, such as communication, organization and technology skills. My organizational skills have developed greatly through maintaining MRL and keeping up to date with constant changes made on the project. With technology, my day-to-day roles involves the use of excel so my skills have vastly developed through additional learning and picking up useful tips and tricks.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given the responsibility of 'owning' the Master Resource List which meant I was constantly following up with others to make sure I kept up to date with any changes made. I was also given responsibility of on / off boarding which is a large amount of responsibility, on boarding is a 10 step process for each resource creating credentials and requesting access to a number of platforms required. Overall I was given a fair amount of responsibility throughout the year.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • In my handover right at the start of the year from the previous intern, he was very thorough going through all tasks required and what a typical date might involve. Also, in the first couple months my manager was very good and present, willing to help out whenever I had questions. However, as the year continued she stopped giving any guidance or support.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture and general atmosphere was okay, there were a couple of good organized gatherings for interns only, however as a whole company there wasn't a whole lot the get involved in, such as company events.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Overall I enjoyed my placement, however this was mostly down to the other interns I interacted with daily. In terms of my job role, it was okay, it ended up being quite repetitive towards the end however I have learnt a lot throughout my time at IBM. Also, the working team around my where all nice however I as they were based globally / not in the same office as me in UK I rarely got to interact with them in person.

  • 7. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • I would say when choosing a role client facing is definitely the way to go as it gives you real world experience, also when choosing a role if it is clear to see choose a role that has multiple interns in the team as this will allow you to better connect with those around you.
