Overview
My daily roles have included the below throughout my internship over different sub placements within my department: - Process to Pay Helpdesk dealing with complex financial queries, raising debit and credit adjustments, invoicing, and payments. - Setting up new suppliers and updating supplier master records to ensure supplier details are accurate and records are clean and up to date. - VAT Compliance - Internal VAT Audits of invoices. - Expense Audits - ensuring it meets Hiltons Policy and HMRC Requirements. - Communication with suppliers, customers, stakeholders, and team members + hotels. - Using software, Microsoft, and other tools to complete work. - Working with team members across the US, UK, and India.
Skills
Skills Obtained: Throughout my internship, I have gained a large amount of knowledge whether this be IT skills, learning financial software packages, on the job training and learning about finance and compliance, my role being in accounts payable has developed my awareness of fraud prevention and ensuring invoices and financial documents meet HMRC and International Accounting Standards. I have learned new skills in excel and Microsoft packages - as well as other financial systems used within Hilton. I develop new skills everyday including communication and how to conduct myself in a professional manner. I have developed on my existing skills whilst developing a whole set of new ones.
Responsibilities
Yes, I have been given a lot of responsibility throughout my internship working on active and existing cases and working on work that all other members of the team work on. I was made a member of the team from day one and was given the responsibility of doing compliance checks on suppliers to prevent fraud. This is a lot of responsibility, and I was required to ensure within my accounts payable space that invoices were HMRC and International Financial Reporting Standards, validate bank details with suppliers through independently found contact and entrusted to ensure I was meeting a first-time right mentality. This placement required a lot of responsibility and trust.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support and guidance throughout my placement, my team were amazing and integrated me as a team member from day one, including me in all activities and they all ensured I felt included and seen throughout my time at Hilton. I was given a lot of training, guidance, and support by my team, I was trained to a very high standard, and I was able to work independently and meet business needs early on.
Culture
The company culture is good, and you feel like a member of the wider team and Hilton family from day one, the work and general culture is positive and having different groups you can join at Hilton such as a Pride, Generations or Ethnic Societies allows us as team members to connect and meet new people. The culture is very inclusive at Hilton, people can express and be who they are with no limits. The atmosphere of the workplace is great and very welcoming.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my placement within Hiltons Finance Department, and I felt as though I was a member of the team and felt like I was able to contribute to the success of my department from day one. I would say I enjoyed my experience at Hilton and my placement very much and the opportunities that have been available to me at Hilton were very good especially as a young professional in finance.
Yes
To any applicants applying for Hilton placements, please be yourself and remember your worth even as a young professional in the workplace. Stay true to yourself and remember you worth is not set on securing a placement or not. Work hard, show passion and be optimistic. Prepare well and stay organized, do not over think any of the application stages and make sure you have a well-presented CV and LinkedIn Profile. My final piece of advice would be, remember to be kind to others as they are in the same position as you and work together as a team to thrive.
