    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • In short I feels like its made up of many roles, including researcher, presenter, stakeholder manager, coder & tester. Everyday is full of meetings with multiple people and teams, these meetings consist of improved ways of working, design spec, sprint kick off ect. In-between the meeting I am designing innovative improvements, with proven solutions based of live data or tests. Working on multiple projects at the same time with difference levels of work, pressure and design structure.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Every day you learn something new in tech. Since broadened by design tools portfolio, now being at a professional level with multiple design softwares and prototyping tools. Along with this learning to code has been a valuable skill. Apart from the tools, I have learnt a great deal in stakeholder management. On any given day you could work with multiple teams & stakeholders with a mixed bag of pleasing or offering advice or an alternate opinion. Additionally ways of collect precise accurate and representative research with data analytics has been an important part of what I have learnt. Finally presenting, within my role you constantly need to present, more to help yourself then others. Sometimes its too a few people or sometimes too as much as 40 or 50. Learning to be comfortable and confident doing these is one of the most important skills as a design, as communication is so important.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Once I had the bare minimum to fulfil the roles requirements, once there I was treated with the same responsibilities & pressure as any other team member. I had specifically asked to be treated in the exact way as I know I would perform better and advance my learning further.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • From my team & the wider digital department there was always support on hand. The process to gain support from others was incredibly easy and well managed thanks to the very welcoming culture. When it comes to support from the placement advisors I do feel this could have been more present. It is quite a unique thing to have multiple placements active in once business at once so the chance to meet up and collaborate more was missed.

Yes it is hard to get an opportunity like this, and to make the most of it. But it is as simple as long as you work hard and stay humble the opportunities that arise do make it all worth it.
