    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role entails working in a lab to complete routine tests as well as doing research for a project. Each student is given their own project to work on throughout the year and are expected to lead the project. Part of the role is to balance working on the project with supporting the business unit. My role in supporting the business unit was to complete routine testing as well as blend new formulations that meet customers demands.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Throughout my placement I developed existing skills like communication, as a lot of what I do requires clear communication between multiple parties involved. Time management was also a key skill that was developed as a lot of my work was time sensitive so being able to maintain a level head and not rush the work but complete it on time was challenging. Patience is a big skill in research as lab work may not always go the way you want so being able to maintain patience with the project is key.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a massive amount of responsibility during my placement. I was given an entire project to lead and was required to feedback my research to the project owner. The project had important outcomes that I was in charge so that gave the project a lot of purpose. I was also responsible for running multiple tests for my colleagues in other departments. It was my responsibility to run these tests in a timely manner and report the results back to the colleague. Becoming the go to person for certain tests was enjoyable.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of support and guidance from my supervisor surrounding the project. They helped to develop my understanding of the fundamental chemistry within the project which was very helpful. Everyone in the department is very friendly and willing to lend a hand if asked. If their was ever an issue with the way a test was going or I hit a wall in my research, their was always someone I could go to that would help me through it.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The general atmosphere was excellent. Everyone on site is extremely friendly and will always say hello to you when walking around site. The company has an emphasis on safety culture which was nice to see, as well as an inclusive environment. Many of the safety protocols put in place are great and I will look to follow them long after I finish my placement. Their is never a sense of urgency, arrival times to work are very relaxed as long as you make the time back up.
