Overview
I start of the day with carrying out data analysis for the production line efficiency, this is then recorded on an excel sheet, which is used in the morning meeting. During the morning meeting I work with the team to decide the actions for the day, based of level of urgency of each issue. After this the day will start to vary depending on the task required. However the rest of the morning will be spent preparing and carrying out maintenance. After this, the rest of the day is spent studying the line to find out where to improve machine efficiency, reduce waste, reduce minor stops. Also root cause analysis is carried out in order to improve performance.
Skills
I developed a strong mechanical understanding of the process involved in the production and packaging of household liquid products. As well as the structure used to analyse and improve this process. I also learnt the practical skills involved with using tools safely and effectively. In addition to this, I developed important digital skills, such as using Microsoft Excel, Power BI and internal analysis programs. Finally I gained a slight insight into the planning and management side of the industry.
Responsibilities
The potential to make major improvements to the efficiency of the production line is quite high, this can help out with company with large cost savings. So there is responsibility in that sense. Other members of the team also rely on you for filling in data for meetings. However there is not a lot of involvement with the decision making for alterations to the line, so it is unlikely that you will be responsibly for damage to the equipment or downtime for the line.
Support & Guidance
I was immediately put with an engineer to shadow for a week, then was put on shift for 2 weeks, which gave me an understanding of production. From that point on I was permanently working with another engineer, which I could go an ask to help from at any opportunity. They also taught me through the basics of what is required from me. I was also given tasks and small projects to complete, guidance was also given for these.
Culture
The atmosphere of the team I worked with was very positive. Everyone was friendly, helpful and welcoming. The people I worked with all had a strong work ethic, they always cared strongly about finishing a job they had been tasked with to the best of their ability. The wider company culture also mirrored this all the interactions I had with other teams were positive.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the placement very much. It was very interesting to learn about the industry and the real life applications of engineering, as well as the range of engineering disciplines involved in the manufacturing process. The sheer scale of the process was also fascinating. The people I worked with also provided a massive positive impact on me, through their welcoming mannerisms and strong work ethic.
Yes
It is very important to be proactive and get stuck in. Try to learn as many skills as possible across a wide range of disciplines. When working it is important to speak to many people and form important working relationships. When applying you should know where your skills lie, in order to decide how you can set yourself apart.
