Overview
Day to day work was centered around progressing in projects, in which I was responsible for the delivery of some significant projects for internal customers. Typical tasks included developing or debugging code in python, pyspark or sql, developing ML pipelines in Apache Spark using data dictionaries or documenting projects for internal reviews.
Skills
Throughout my year at GE, I significantly developed my existing computational skills in python, learning about object-orientated programming and utilizing principals such as encapsulation and inheritance. I also learnt about Apache Spark and learnt to use PySpark by writing my own custom modules for an ML pipeline. Furthermore, I learnt to use SQL working with data within relational databases and learnt about database normalization - a useful tool in my data science toolkit.
Responsibilities
I was given sole responsibility in the delivery of significant projects for GE internal customers which had impactful results. Having ownership of a project enabled me to use my own problem-solving skills and intuition to get over any obstacles.
Support & Guidance
There were many people around that were able to support me throughout my placement. If I had a quick problem then there was always someone I could send a quick message to via Microsoft teams and there would usually be a quick resolution. If a problem was becoming a roadblock, there were weekly rhythms and check ins with internal teams to help resolve this and overcome hurdles.
Culture
I was really impressed by the company culture and there was a nice atmosphere within my team. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly and I was able to make some strong connections with colleagues, which in turn made me feel very supported. GE's culture had been well thought through and everyone was abiding by GE's behaviors. There was also a recognition system in place where people rewarded colleagues for good work.
Your Impressions
Really enjoyed my placement overall. I would say there was a steep learning curve initially being exposed to a new industry, developing new technical skills and meeting new colleagues. However, as my year went on, my confidence increased and I felt comfortable to succeed within my environment, making the most of all the opportunities that came my way.
Yes
