Overview
My day to day role involves gathering baseline data and creating deliverables (reports, summaries, maps, workspaces, etc.) that assess/show flood risk to a site. This process involves data handling, use of GIS spaces (Arc and Q), modelling, followed by a write up. Other daily activities include downloading model information for new bids/ potential projects, work on nutrient neutrality, and communication with Local Authorities and Councils.
Skills
I have developed by skills in both QGIS and ArcGIS, now being able to more confidently handle and analysis data. My writing skill has increased, and I can notice the improvement of my professional writing style and commercial and technical knowledge throughout the work on my placement. I have had the opportunity to complete some modelling using Tuflow which is a new skill I have learnt though the placement.
Responsibilities
Yes, while I am only a placement student, I have been given the opportunity to take responsibility for my work. I have also been given increased responsibility in one of my projects, organising site visits and further work on sites, as well as issuing draft reports to the client. I have also been able to be involved in organising and presenting in wider team meetings and at events such as university open days.
Support & Guidance
I received a good balance of support and guidance. My line manager and team were great at giving me the space to learn as I go and take personal responsibility while always being happy to help if I experience any difficulty or have any questions.
Culture
The general atmosphere of the company is great. As a student, I wasn't expecting the level of opportunities within the workspace, and such a supporting team atmosphere. The company provides training that helps personal and professional growth and has been happy to chat about potential future options for my career.
Your Impressions
I absolutely loved it, cannot recommend enough. Having the opportunity to take a year out of university to complete actual, real life, meaningful work is amazing. I have also enjoyed the lifestyle of having a full time job and finding it easier to relax and switch off from work in the evenings and weekends, rather than having university coursework and deadlines as a constant worry.
Yes
Apply early, Arcadis were one of the first role openings I saw and I heard back about my confirmed place before some people had applied to placements. I would also advise giving early careers a shout via their email or attending an open day at your uni to chat to people working in the company and talk about potential options and career paths for you.
