Overview
Working in the asset management team, handling and processing data or filling in reports within a sustainability focussed engineering context. Regular team meetings on progress, wellbeing, health and safety moments etc.
Skills
I have progressed far with my use of and ability regarding excel. It quickly becomes apparent that when handling this much data and this regularly, that being adept at excel is a must. I have taken a couple quick courses in it but most of my learning has been on the job.
Responsibilities
For the most part no is the short answer. Mainly given the dropdown tasks that are of less priority or require less inside/business area knowledge. I was however given the opportunity to go on a HAZOP for 2 days with my director and scribed the meetings, and completed the report itself. This is something I have been told it is rare for a placement student to do.
Support & Guidance
There was good support available to me should I require it and I felt I could always ask my team or line manager to help me.
Culture
The culture is friendly indeed. Lots of stuff going on in the office and things to get involved with (charity days, lunch time walks, after work drinks/football/meet ups), the sports and social team of which I joined and was part of the sports team.
Your Impressions
I did enjoy the placement overall. The social aspect of the office was great fun and the people were lovely, very welcoming and inclusive. The work side started off well and I was busy enough to have things to do each day, however in around March-April after our big project was finished there was very little work to go around for a few months and so I had little to do especially billable work.
Yes
Make sure you are good at excel - no need to be a wizard who can do formulae and complex stuff just know it will come into play. Be confident when speaking in meetings - yes you will have to speak in meetings! Ask lots of questions too.
