Overview
My role involves using many different analytical techniques, generally working in the lab around 60-70% of the time applying techniques such as LC-MS, ICP-OES, NMR. Outside of the lab the day-to-day activities include writing up the experiments, processing results from the analyses and meetings discussing ongoing improvement activities for the team.
Skills
I have learnt a huge amount of new skills. Going in with limited analytical knowledge I now feel competent completing analytical lab work end to end as well as understanding the applications of this work. Specific skills I have developed include: Sample preparation, using an LC-MS, preparation and processing of NMR, use of ICP-OES. I have also developed my confidence in presenting and ability to communicate in a team.
Responsibilities
I have been given a fairly large amount of responsibility during this placement but with the understanding that if I do not feel comfortable I know who to go to for more assistance. After training I felt well equipped to be responsible for my own tasks. There is also a lot of responsibility coming from the freedom of how you structure the work you do within the work week.
Support & Guidance
The support and guidance I have received has been outstanding. I have always felt able to ask when I wasn't sure what I was doing (which is a lot at the start of the placement year). The training was thorough and sets you up well to be left to do independent lab work. Outside of the lab there is also a great deal of support and guidance available form your supervisor and manager.
Culture
The culture at AstraZeneca is really good. Most people are really friendly and there are plenty of opportunities to socialise with your team, other placement students and other employees. The atmosphere is more focused on continuous improvement and how we can make things better rather than shaming when things go wrong making asking for help easier and the atmosphere feel more friendly.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed my placement a lot. It has exceeded my expectations in terms of skills developed and the supportive environment AstraZeneca provide. The work has been meaningful and enjoyable, the team I have worked with have been friendly and welcoming.
Yes
I would highly recommend applying, try not to be too nervous about the interview.
