Overview
Working within a team with diverse needs and projects at any given time, it is refreshing to say that every day was different. Throughout the placement though I would say there were consistently lots of opportunities to learn hand on with varying tasks including managing agencies and other stakeholders, heading up research or merely attending meetings with those more senior and seasoned to see how things are done by the experts.
Skills
My placement provided me with valuable insights into an agile business landscape refining my skills in research, critical thinking, collaborative working and cultivating a dynamic approach to tasks. Additionally, I can now offer additional skills including competitor landscaping, strategy formulation, finance processes and trend forecasting. Working with my team nurtured a culture of excellence and tenacity in pushing the envelope and prioritising purpose-driven results.
Responsibilities
I was given real tasks and real responsibility to take on which is the best of worlds when it comes to placement schemes. I had a great line manager who eased me into the workload focusing on me settling and wrapping my head around the dynamics of corporate in the first leg of my placement. It also helped to always being willing to help and to volunteer assistance to other team members where feasible.
Support & Guidance
I had a fantastic line manager and worked in an amazing team. My line manager started with daily catch ups as I eased into the role and when I grew more steady, these catch ups moved to twice a week and then eventually once a week. We always had correspondence and she made sure I was included in all team events where possible; I can honestly say she advocated for my growth and success from jump!
Culture
The company culture is really welcoming and there are many different social events/groups you can join as well - I was part of the Unilever Christian Union (UCU) which was such a great bunch! As a placement student intending on learning as much as possible about marketing (which is outside my degree field), it was incredible to work with an award winning team surrounded by such competent and industry leading colleagues. It was the most conducive environment for me to learn.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly did. It has set me up really well for future undertakings and given me a great peak into what working life and corporate involves.
Yes
If you are an international student, take note of how future progression programs post-placement might differ in accessibility because of sponsorship regulations. This will help you make an informed decision in picking which companies would benefit you most in the long run. Unilever is an incredibly global company so don't be afraid to share your unique experiences with the brands and products as this unique tone of voice is what makes Unilever the company it is.
