Overview
My role in audit involves reviewing and testing financial data related to my clients financial statements, and ensuring the data is accurate and as free from misstatements as possible. This means giving the management and stakeholders assurance over the accounts and a clear imagine of their financial position.
Skills
I’ve learned how to use Microsoft excel in an advanced capacity. I have also had lots of exposure to different financial statement areas which has given me an edge in sitting my professional exams, and will help with my future educational development goals. More importantly, I have an understanding of how larger businesses operate and what their financials mean in terms of going concern.
Responsibilities
At first I had received a lot of training, and the focus was mainly on my ACA exams. I was then progressively given work of varying levels of difficulty which tested the skills I had learnt in my training. Gradually I progressed on harder financial statement areas, but this was crucial to ensuring I am constantly learning and building new skills relevant to my role.
Support & Guidance
I was able to adapt to the office culture quite quickly and was allocated a buddy (a senior worker) as well as a Line Manager who was responsible in checking my progress throughout my placement. I always had someone around I could ask questions.
Culture
The environment was great, and we were given the freedom of a hybrid work environment which was a really nice perk of the job. Everyone is super friendly and always willing to help. And in the event that you do struggle with anything work related, there is always someone to support you.
Your Impressions
Very much. Taking a placement year with Forvis Mazars was the best decision I could have made. It has helped me get a head start in my ACA career and has built up invaluable skills for the future.

Apply for any positions that are of interest and make sure you do your research into the type of position you’re applying for. Often the reality of the position is quite a lot different to your expectations. Don’t just apply to one position either, as you may not know what position best fits your character.
