Overview
Every new opportunity that is presented to development has to go through feasibility to be valued. This way we can understand what the deal is worth, which helps in negotiating terms with owners. I perform market research, conduct in-depth financial modelling, scrutinize market trends, and assess the viability of new projects in order to evaluate potential investment decisions.
Skills
I have learnt an unprecedented number of new skills - from excel, financial modelling, accounting, and valuation to public speaking and networking. I have also gained unquantifiable perspective by speaking to colleagues based in different regions who cover different areas, from the Americas, EMEA and Asia Pacific. Networking with people from all different backgrounds and international experience has given me a whole new perspective on the job market and where i could see myself in the future.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was completely performing as a full-time analyst rather than an intern who helps with admin. I was given the same amount of work as my team - each being given a project we have to financially assess ourselves. Of course, more support was provided to me in the beginning whilst undergoing training, and more understanding was there for all the questions I had to ask.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance, all the way throughout. I still ask as many questions now as when I first started and was completely new to the industry. There is never a silly question as there is always more to learn, which my team understood and encouraged - never making me feel incapable or inferior compared to them given all of their experience.
Culture
The company culture is amazing. They are always encouraging the wider team to mingle and get to know each other through shared interests and hobbies. Social events are organised often, with the canteen downstairs giving out free food and drinks for events, such as watch parties or games night quizzes. The work life balance is amazing, with everyone being encouraged to go home and switch off.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship to the maximum extent and I am so grateful that I chose to undergo this placement year. I didn't have any preconceptions or expectations as I simply wanted experience, but Hilton went above and beyond anything I could have anticipated.
Yes
Do industry research and really get to know the different competitors and different brands they have. Make sure you have an understanding of the scale of brands - from economy, midscale, upscale to luxury (and more in-between). Understand the difference between hard brands vs lifestyle, focused service vs full service. Show that you are willing and eager to learn, and that you are a team player who is thoughtful so people can picture you in their team.
