Overview
On a day to day basis I am creating carbon models to be uploaded to our internal carbon estimating tool called Moata Carbon Portal. Also assisting with the selling and onboarding of clients to using this tool. This involves regular client facing meetings and researching certain items of water infrastructure or mechanical items in order to accurately model their carbon impact.
Skills
Yes, I have learnt a lot to do with carbon estimating, how to do it, and why it is important / how it can be integrated into both Mott MacDonald and our clients business model.
Responsibilities
At the beginning no, but as I gained experience and proved competence I have been regularly given the opportunity to take responsibility for increasingly important things.
Support & Guidance
I felt the support and guidance was adequate. It wasn't proactively placed upon me, but was always there when I asked for it.
Culture
Most people are very friendly especially the graduates. I did feel however the office was predominantly employees who had been at the company for 10s of years and it didn't feel very modern or progressive. I also didn't feel the atmosphere was very hard working.
Your Impressions
At the beginning I did not really enjoy the placement as I was not getting enough work and had to fight for the work I got. Now, once I have proved competency in some areas of my carbon work I am enjoying it much more and am often giving interesting and challenging tasks which I enjoy.
No
Make sure you have intentions on what kind of work you want to do. As you will need to fight for those specific opportunities in order to get the work. otherwise I think you could be led down a path of doing boring admin tasks.
