Overview
The job as an electronics engineer generally involves working on an electronic product throughout different stages of its lifecycle. This could involve concept generation from block diagrams, to schematic design and PCB layout all the way to designing the test specification for the assembled unit.
Skills
Personally, I have learned many new skills throughout the placement. These include specific skills such as schematic design and component selection, project management and forecasting resources and tasks, and using different software tools along the way, as well as general engineering skills, such as being able to fully back up any data that is presented and removing ambiguity from statements made.
Responsibilities
Yes, although being technically ranked lowest out of the entire group, I feel as though I was given plenty of opportunity to make the calls that I wanted to make, and was given a high level of trust to deliver what was needed to a project. You have to prove yourself to be trustworthy to earn this position, as everyone should.
Support & Guidance
There was ample support and guidance throughout my placement, with regular catch-ups with my technical and placement manager. If I ever needed support it was always available and people were always happy to help.
Culture
Company culture is friendly and relaxed. Specific to the team that I was in, I didn't feel micromanaged or over watched. Semi regular social events were nice to network within and lots of different extra curricular activities helped to find new interests.
Your Impressions
Thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I felt that it gave me a great opportunity to grow and learn in a new industry. I feel as though I have made a meaningful impact on the business and some good connections along the way.
Yes
Don't be afraid to try and grow your interpersonal skills here, there are many opportunities to get better and you should take them. In this industry you can be highly skilled, but being a good communicator is the other half of being a great engineer.
