Overview
During my role I work on my own project. This is a project that has real business impact. My day is often filled with Supplier meetings, team meetings and a lot of individual analytical work. I also operate as a category forecaster. I have been given my own categories which I am responsible for the accurate of our forecasts. This has a huge impact on what will be ordered and what ends up on the shelf.
Skills
I have definitely had to develop some key skills. My analytical have been a main development. My skills on Microsoft Excel has been something I have had to work really hard on. Another skill I have had to develop is thinking strategically, thinking about how my project fits into the bigger picture. Building relationships has been a key part of my time here. I am in constant communication with Suppliers or other internal teams. This requires me to interact with a variety of stakeholders whilst needing to put across my own views.
Responsibilities
Yes, I have been given real responsibility, pretty much straight after my training period. My project has a massive impact on how we show data to suppliers. This is also a key interest to our other Aldi South countries. Having internal and external stakeholder engagement is a daily occurrence. Alongside this project I have a big impact on what products end up on the shelf
Support & Guidance
We received a full 8 week training program which included some in store time. This gave us a more well rounded view of how the company works. In head office we have a mentor that we can look to for guidance. We also have a director assigned as a personnel leader. This is mainly for non work related issues and is someone to go to about anything. In terms of our role support. This is also provided. I have 1:1's weekly with my manager and a separate 1:1 with my director.
Culture
There is a corporate culture to the workforce. Assistance is always available and people are more than willing to help. There are support systems in place to help you. However, you are required to work hard and pull your weight. Being given a lot of responsibility also means you have to deliver results which can be challenging.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed my placement. I have learnt a lot throughout the last 12 months, and I would recommend it to any university student. It has been challenging at times, but this is only due to the level of responsibility you are trusted with. I felt like my work this year has had a real impact on the business. The team and department is really friendly and offer a lot of support. The structure of the placement is really well thought out. It is structured and helps you develop your skills as you learn more throughout the 12 months.
Yes
Make sure you read up on the job description. The different departments within the 'head office placement' have very different opportunities, so it's important you are applying to the right department for you. Work on your analytical skills before coming a course on excel won't harm you! Just be yourself and confident throughout your application process/interviews.
