Overview
Supporting LCA-related tasks and capability development within a new team, as well as having the opportunity to work with the biotechnology team on a practical side project.
Skills
As my placement differed to the usual content in my degree, I learnt much about LCAs, environmental reporting, coding and PowerBI, as well as soft skills from working in a corporate environment.
Responsibilities
Yes, much of the work I produced was presented to senior leadership and fed directly into category target setting and annual reporting. The work you carry out as an intern are real projects that aim to benefit the business.
Support & Guidance
The placement team at BAT provided support with the development of soft skills, including presentation skills, CV development and project management. You are provided with numerous levels of support - not only do you have the placement team, but you are provided with a mentor for personal development and a line manager that will work with you to succeed in your projects.
Culture
Everyone at BAT is very open and accommodating. If you are interested in what they do, they are happy to sit down and talk to you or show you. As a result, the general atmosphere is very friendly and you will feel welcome here. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with social events with your team and the wider community, as well as inclusivity initiatives such as B United and Women in BAT.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement overall - it provided an insight into a new business sector that I do not have much exposure to within my degree. Despite my initial lack of knowledge and understanding, I was presented with numerous opportunities and challenges that allowed me to develop my skills and experience while working on high-priority work. My only negative is I wish there was more interaction between myself and my line manager, so I would encourage you to set up frequent catch-ups when possible.
Yes
My advice is to try and maximize your time here - it will go quickly so try and make the most of each day. You can do this by trying to network across the business and learn things beyond your immediate team or department. Keep asking questions and get involved with a variety of projects and work.
