    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I work in the lab most days, working on various analytical machinery such as HPTLC. I work in PPE and follow safety protocols when handling solvents and chemical compounds. When I am in the office, I often set up meeting with colleagues in different teams to push my project through the development cycle.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have greatly developed my presentation skills through the numerous presenting opportunities throughout the year. I have practical experience in the analytical equipment in the lab (CAMAG HPTLC, Apricot SPT labtech, Copas flow cytometer etc). I am better at planning my work and managing my time to effectively deliver on my objectives on time.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, my manager entrusted me to carry out my own work in the lab, and also help out on some of his work also. The placement team allows a pair of interns to chair the monthly intern meeting and allows us to plan a development activity also. The interns are also entrusted with organising a speed networking event and a poster session.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The placement team assigns a mentor for professional development, a buddy in my team for day-to-day support, and a placement team buddy for placement related concerns. There were plenty of opportunities to raise concerns and ask for guidance throughout the year. There was numerous sessions on how to organise a poster session and how to deliver an end of year presentation.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company atmosphere was friendly and welcoming and I had no trouble fitting into the team. However, there is some innate competition within teams and the lack of giving credit for another teams work that I can see between teams. Overall the company does well to promote inclusiveness and welcomeness
