Overview
I conduct literature reviews and design studies and experiments for toxicant reduction in heated products. I communicate internally and with external partners to conduct/commission experiments, and once collected I interpret and analyse data. I write reports and prepare presentations on experimental approaches, results and recommendations as well as preparing for technical reviews.
Skills
I have improved my oral presentation skills the most, developing confidence and a speaking style that suits me. I now understand how to present scientific and technical findings in a clear and concise way to a variety of audiences. My communication and networking skills have also improved through opportunities to speak to external partners, and cross-functional teams. I have learnt how to use a variety of lab equipment specific to this industry as well as developing my good lab practice from university.
Responsibilities
Yes - I was allowed to hypothesise and conduct my own experiments from scratch, after approval from managers. I had the opportunity to work on projects that had high priority within the business.
Support & Guidance
My line manager was excellent at guiding me throughout my placement, encouraging me to develop a research mindset for business. I also had a 'buddy' within my team and also from another department who I could ask for help at any time. There is also a placement team who helped me to balance university requirements with industry work. I was also given a mentor who was chosen for me based on what objectives I set myself at the start of the year who helped me to develop more lab skills.
Culture
My team were very welcoming and always up to help when I needed, offering encouragement and feedback throughout my placement. The culture is very collaborative, inclusive and innovation is inspired throughout the company.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would like to return after I complete my university studies. I feel I can use the skills that I have developed, especially confidence and presentation skills, in my university course and in my everyday life. I enjoyed the projects I carried out and I felt valued and empowered throughout my internship.
