    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was an audit trainee, so no day was every the same which I enjoyed. I would work on different sections of the FSAs and perform the desired tests required. I would also complete stocktake during the year end months (December, March, June). I was able to interact with several internal employees as well as external entities as well. I enjoyed the responsibility I gained, as although I was a trainee, I was still given tasks and tests to complete that were solely my sections with the FSAs.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • First of all I was able to improve my communication skills and team work skills due to the opportunity to work in lots of different teams on lots of different audits during the course. I was able to go on residentials to allow for a greater understanding of the different communication types and how different individuals communicate. For the new skills I have learnt, would be first how to complete an audit and the common tests needed within each FSA section. Before my placement I had a basic understanding of what an audit was but not sure exactly what it entailed, but now I can say I know what is needed when performing an audit.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I would say going into this placement as an audit trainee, I didn't think I would be given as much responsibility as I have been during the last 12 months. I was lucky enough to work on one of the larger companies within my hub and was given whole FSAs to work on within this entity. I didn't realize that I would go into this experience being able to have the same responsibility as a graduate, as they have more experience than me due to their degree.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support/guidance during my time at BDO. I had a people manager who was always there to make sure I was settling in okay and that the workload I was being given was never to much for me. During the first 6 months of my probationary period I was having monthly meetings with my people manager to discuss the areas I had been working on previously and then setting my goals for the next month to help me achieve as much as possible in my 12 months. Not only this, I also had incredible support from my peers and intake I started with, who were always there to offer some support if I was ever stuck on any work I was allocated to complete. Everybody at BDO was always so welcoming to lending support even if I wasn't currently working with them on a job, they would always offer to spend 5-10 minutes wherever needed.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The general atmosphere at BDO is warm and welcoming. Everyone was always very friendly to me, would always lend a hand if I were ever in need of some help. The office was always a happy, bubbly place that would then be portrayed within the work where everyone wanted to succeed and produce work to the best of our ability. BDO have 4 specific core values, one of which is to be genuine with everything you do, making it feel like there is less pressure on one another.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I extremely enjoyed my placement experience making sure to make so many new friends along the way, helping to make the experience even more special. I was given so many opportunities to showcase the experience I had learnt along the way, by being given sections within the FSAs to work on my own. The culture at BDO was wonderful and I am grateful to have been able to experience this placement.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • I would tell people to make sure they go for it, don't hold yourself back and always be yourself no matter what. When applying to BDO, make sure to be bold and be genuine as they are 2 of BDOs main values, so to portray this within the application process will help you make yourself known and get one step closer to being offered a job with BDO.
