Overview
During the internship, we had the opportunity to work within our chosen departments, taking on real work to help out the team. There were a wide number of departments we could choose from and we ranked our preferences. The work completed varied depending on the department but all involved helping out the wider team be it with drafting, amending documents, phone calls and emails etc.
Skills
I have learnt a lot about the day to day activites of the corporate department as well as the people in the team. From studying I had an idea of the work the team does but have never had hands on experience with it. I have improved my legal research and drafting skills in a new area.
Business Insight
We had a 3 day induction in the DLA London office where we learnt a lot about the firm itself and how it developed into the international business it is today. We had speakers tell us about the work they do, their values and attitudes to developing the firm and speakers to tell us about the network groups each DLA office has.
Culture
The atmosphere was very friendly. The team I was a part of was very busy with work but always made the time to talk through work and get to know me. It was a professional but relaxed environment where everyone felt comfortable to be themselves.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed getting to know my team and get hands on experience with a wide variety of the work. The activities and social events also helped us get to know the current trainees and learn more about the working culture and work life balance of the firm.
Yes
I would say to be yourself and enjoy it. The people you work with are very knowledgeable and experienced so try to learn as much as you can from them.
