The Role
The work that you are given to do can be the work that usually no-body else wants to do and that is for a reason. It could have been a little more challenging however I think it varies depending on who your trainee buddy is.
Ultimately not everybody wants to speak to a "vac schemer" but the majority of the people who work here are friendly and willing to hear about your background/talk about themselves for a little while.
Couldn't have asked for a more attentive trainee buddy. My supervisor changed at the last minute and she hadnt done it before (she is also VERY busy) so I saw her less, not that I particularly minded.
I always had something to do but at no point felt like a real work environment when the tasks are are bottomless pit. Providing you dont send out "capacity emails" (whose idea was that?!) and ensure you make the work last you can get away with not being rushed or bombarded.
This was my main area of concern looking at it as a potential future training establishment. It is clear that there are certain levels of work certain people are expected to do. From my knowledge of other law firms, the lack of responsibility/challenging tasks happen accross the board.
I would say that the placement enhanced my networking skills. It also taught mem to give more credit to paying attention to detail; it really does just look better when there are no punctuation, spelling, grammar and layout errors.
The Company
Everybody works very hard and it was quite quiet. The PA's, trainees and one or two office personalities brightened the place up a bit.
Seamless, apart from some timetabling hiccups which were inevitable in the particular circumstances.
The placement is more about experiencing what the firm is like rather than a work placement designed to improve skills. It gets 10/10 for the former, but the latter it would get a 2/10.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Not specifically to this firm but I think private practice can stifle development especially at the lower end of the scale. I might prefer somewhere where it is evident that trainees are really challenged and pushed to improve their skills.
The Culture
We all got on really well, I certainly didnt feel there was any competition between us and we enjoyed the drinks and treasure hunt together!
Leeds is dearer than the towns that surround the area but no where near London prices.
Leeds has some great bars and restaurants all within walking distance from this office. There is nothing particularly innovative on the Leeds social scene, so if your expecting Shoreditch or Leicester Square, you'll be disappointed.
I was invited to play hockey on one evening of the first week. That was all, the firm doesnt seem to have a big list of sports team , in fact one trainee said there was barely a male football team never mind a female one. I would have liked more things to get involved in.
