Overview
My role involves working closely with different engineering teams within propulsion to deliver features in the car. This ranged from working on Simulink models to python scripts and pipelines on Gitlab. I also had the opportunity to do track testing after flashing my software in the cars.
Skills
In terms of technical skills, this placement helped me develop my coding and research skills. I also had the opportunity to work in Agile, and solidify my understanding of pipelines and CICD. In terms of soft skills, communication played a significant role in my day to day. I learnt to be more confident and comfortable asking questions.
Responsibilities
Yes! I was fortunate my team put so much trust in me, and was always willing to guide me when needed. I got to see my work being implemented and used, which is a good feeling.
Support & Guidance
Plenty. My team was always supportive and humoured me whenever I had questions.
Culture
The company culture was excellent. There is always some form of interaction between upper management and employees. We would be updated on the company’s state of affairs by town halls and weekly meetings.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement with JLR. Throughout my placement, I did shorter placements with different teams within the company. Maybe I got lucky with my teams but I feel like everywhere I went, I was well supported and managed to get along with my colleagues. I could also see my contribution which gave me a sense of fulfilment.
Yes
Stay curious and open to everything. Make sure you do your research on the company in the application stages, and think about how you can embody their core values.
