Overview
I was placed in the Commercial Dispute Resolution team where I had the opportunity to do research for the trainees and also paralegals. I was also able to draft meaningful letters such as a Letter Before Cause and Letter Before Action. The role also allowed me to sit in on an insightful team training session where I learnt how solicitors kept up to date with the latest developments with the law.
Skills
I have developed my team-work, collaborative and communication abilities. The work itself allowed me to hone my legal documentation skills through the various tasks I had to perform. In this professional environment I also learnt the important of attention to detail and being thorough in research. I have also developed an understanding of asking questions as it is essential to reach out when you are unsure on something.
Business Insight
It was really eye-opening as to how the legal profession, and Gateley in particular work behind the scenes. There are plenty of diverse roles available as Gateley has acquired numerous other companies e.g., Adamson Jones who specialise in IP law. This also allowed me to get a broader understanding of the requirements each role within the company has.
Culture
The company culture is the main thing that stood out to me during my time with Gateley. It is honestly the deciding factor in my consideration as to what law firm I want to be with. The culture is really welcoming and everyone is kind whilst being easy going. Not once have I felt like I could not approach anyone. Also the general atmosphere is really calm.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the insight a lot.
Yes
If you have made it to the assessment centre I would recommend being yourself (yes I know very cliché). But ultimately, the people interviewing and assessing you want to see if you are a person they would want to work with. They can very easily notice someone who is not themselves. Imagine you are interviewing someone who has no personality. You would not want to see them everyday. So be interested and yourself!
