Overview
A mixture of talks and insight into the firm, alongside opportunities for networking and socialising, in addition to doing work for the department. Some of the work was on live cases, other tasks involved research, drafting, reviewing documents, sitting in on meetings, writing case briefs etc. Plenty of opportunity for learning and asking questions. Work is challenging in a good way - no overly simple or administrative tasks.
Skills
Networking and confidence in the work place. Client interaction skills. Researching. Attention to detail and being thorough. Drafting. Quick learning and making observations. Critical thinking. Proof-reading.
Business Insight
A lot of insight is given into the business on a whole as well as specific departments. Everyone from all departments is willing to take time to talk to you about what they do and answer any questions. A lot of insight is also given into the internal networks, communities, clubs - also opportunities to join in with the internal clubs such as running or yoga.
Culture
Incredibly welcoming and friendly. Everyone is honest and open but direct - staff achieve an incredible balance between hard work and friendliness. General atmosphere is calm and positive. Culture is great - a lot of social events and opportunities to get involved in internal activities. Everyone seems to be friends.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed it. I was welcomed in and given what felt like meaningful work that would either help the firm or help my own learning - nothing idle or administrative. They keep you busy as long as you ask for work when you run out of it. You are trusted to get on with the work and give it a go and then they are happy to discuss and questions after this. They do go beyond in terms of inviting you to interact with clients or go to networking events. No hierarchy and most partners are just as friendly as the trainees and junior lawyers.
Yes
Know why the firm stands out from others. It is important that you can get along from all kinds of people and be friendly and optimistic as well as hard working, thorough and keen to learn. Make sure you align with their values and the skills they look for (find out online or attend an insight evening) - find ways to compare this to your life experience. Show that you are committed to law and to that firm and then prove it while you are here.
