Overview
A usual day would include tasks such as proofreading legal documents, attending online/ in-person client meetings and taking notes, research tasks on various matters ranging from more technical issues to less legal matters such as objective background research. Alongside the tasks, we would have catch-up meetings with supervisors and trainee buddies, catching up with fellow interns.
Skills
My skills have massively developed throughout the scheme. While the level of work is extremely detailed and more advanced than the knowledge and understanding I was initially holding, getting involved in the deals and piecing information together leads to a comprehensive understanding of the fee-earners role, the drafting procedures, the inter-connectivity of the practice areas and the progress of deals. In terms of specific skills, my attention to detail, collaborative skills and protectiveness have improved massively as these are a small set of skill sets that are required every day.
Business Insight
Since I attended client meetings, i learnt the true value of DLA's global perspective and their entrepreneurial approach to their business. the fact that DLA treats their clients as business partners and truly uses all the alternative tools developed to support them throughout their journey was very interesting.
Culture
DLA has truly broken down any stereotypes regarding corporate law firms and corporate lawyers. All the people at DLA from the trainees, associates, partners and executives were approachable, chatty and willing to help and answer any questions. They made us feel welcomed throughout and created an atmosphere where I was waking up happy to go to the office and be surrounded by such warm and kind people. The firm has truly integrated their values within their work.
Your Impressions
It was an enjoyable experience with intensive learning curve and a welcoming community
Yes
Being yourself was the biggest tip that I received. Going in with an open mind, an enthusiastic attitude and curiosity would be some great tips. But coming back to being yourself is the most important aspect because it is a three week long interview where you can't put up a facade. They are looking for people that match their community and faking such an attitude will not be mutually beneficial.
