Overview
I completed various work tasks for my supervisors in my two seats and attended talks and workshops focused on different practice areas of the firm. I also had a group task presentation where I collaborated with some of my fellow vacation schemers to present on a recent deal that the firm advised on. I gained an in-depth understanding of the type of work and various sectors that different practice areas of the firm are involved in, and exposure to the firm's culture.
Skills
I developed the following skills: drafting, research, communicating legislation and legal documents succinctly, proofreading and attention to detail, collaboration and verbal communication with team members, written communication when drafting client emails, presentation and public speaking, and time management and organisation. I also developed my ability to take initiative and be proactive with approaching people and completing tasks, and ensuring that I asked lots of questions. I honed my drafting skills, in terms of simplifying legal jargon, writing in a client friendly manner, and learning how to summarise a hearing from case documents.
Business Insight
I found it interesting to learn about the various sectors and practice areas that the firm is involved in, as well as the initiatives that shape the firm's culture. From different internal and external interactions with the graduate recruitment team, trainees, associates, partners, clients, and the business development team, I attained a more holistic understanding about the work responsibilities of different roles and types of clients they work with. I also enjoyed attending the pro bono and diversity and inclusion workshops to gain insight into the firm's culture and corporate social responsibility initiatives that people at the firm can get involved in.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere was very inclusive and collaborative. As an international student, I particularly appreciated the company's workforce diversity goals and inclusivity of different cultures. From trainees, to associates, to partners, everyone was very friendly and willing to help me learn and answer my questions. I felt well-supported throughout my vacation scheme and enjoyed getting to know various people at the firm.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the insight to a large extent due to various reasons. I was able to learn new skills, build on existing skills, and deepen my understanding of different types of law, through working on different tasks, presenting our group task, and receiving valuable feedback from my supervisors and trainee buddies. I enjoyed the work tasks I was given, as they were varied and interesting, and provided insight as to what life as a trainee would be like. I also enjoyed the networking opportunities I received, where I was able to speak to different members of the firm over coffee or ask questions at talks and workshops. This enabled me to build connections with people and consolidate my understanding of different practices at the firm. Each day was exciting, and the insight was a valuable experience overall in terms of working towards my professional and personal goals.
Yes
I would do as much research as possible on the firm to gain an understanding of the type of practice areas and clients that the firm is involved in and work with, as well as the culture of the firm, to ascertain whether Taylor Wessing is the right firm for you. I would also try to speak to as many people as possible at the firm, through LinkedIn or other resources like Aspiring Solicitors, when going through the application process. It is important to be proactive and commercially aware by keeping up with the news and legal developments. Don't be afraid to ask questions and put yourself out there.
