Overview
The day to day involves helping audit teams conduct planning, testing and produce an audit opinion. To achieve this I was involved in client meetings, internal catchups, filling in planning and conclusion forms and testing assigned areas/accounts (e.g trade payables etc) of the business. A big part of the day is spent in liaising with the client to obtain evidence, and documentation of the actual audit work performed.
Skills
I developed my technical knowledge and competency. I got to apply the accounting/audit concepts and principles learned in the class in actual practice improving my grasp on them. More importantly, developed my communication and analytical thinking skills, had to efficiently and professionally communicate with clients and internal teams to produce high work quality work while adhering strict deadlines. I had to apply my own analytical skills to solve problems.
Responsibilities
Yes, through out my placement I worked on actual clients and projects. I was given my own areas and accounts to work on which were my responsibility. WIth time the areas I was assigned got more complex. Gained excellent support and help from everyone around me helping me tackle complex areas and produce the work with the quality desired within the timelines.
Support & Guidance
Received excellent guidance throughout, was assigned a buddy and a counselor who treated me like a friend through out and helped me look for opportunities, solve problems and work on my own skills. Even the wider EY network was extremely supportive with various resources provided to assist in professional exams, learnings and finding the right opportunities and work for you.
Culture
The regional office I worked at was like a small family. Everyone within my department knew each other, were always ready to help and make friendly conversations and share ideas. The atmosphere made you feel comfortable and allowed you to work on your growth.
Your Impressions
It was one of the best experiences I have had, full of challenges and learnings but then having people around you to help you succeed and overcome those challenges which gives you extreme satisfaction at the end.
Yes
Start applying early and just be yourself through out the process. Be confident and natural in the way you conduct yourself and keep in mind the culture in the company and how will fit in, so show yourself as a person willing to learn, who will work good within a team and will care about the wider network and team.
