    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a project manager, your daily responsibilities vary depending on the type of project you are working on. However, typically daily responsibilities will include: attending meetings, liaising with teams to get an update on the progress of task completion, allocating new deliverables to teams, reminding teams of deadlines and budget restrictions. You may complete task that support the team, in my case this included budget reporting and document control responsibilities.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my placement I have been able to develop all of my pre-existing skills. But most importantly, tasks and circumstances have challenges me to develop new ones. The most important skill I have developed is self- awareness; in terms of the ability to be very conscious about perception and style of communication, as both of these aspects have a big impact.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • As you stay on your project longer, your level of responsibility will increase. However, you should not allow time be the only determinant of your level of responsibility. Be pro-active and seek new responsibilities, enquire about additional tasks and ask or support in engaging in new activities that will help identify and develop skill gaps.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • As soon as I joined Mott Macdonald, I was given a buddy, who supported my onboarding and was a substantial source of support during my first quarter. Although, they didn't remain my buddy throughout the entirety of my placement, the fantastic relationship we developed allowed for continual support. You will also have an immediate internal team and line manager who are there to support you in all instances.
