Overview
There were 3 stages to the summer internship. It began with a 3 day induction at the London office where we met other interns from across the UK and Dublin. My hotel and travel costs were paid for by the firm which was amazing. The induction consisted of networking and listening to speakers and presentations allowing us to understand more about life at the firm. Following the induction, we had 3 weeks at our home office. Prior to the internship everyone gets to rank the different practice groups and then are later allocated 2 spending 2 weeks in 1 practice group and 1 week in another. Day to day consists of completing a variety of tasks given by either your line manager or other members of the team. I found the work interesting and at times challenging but everyone was very friendly and open to me asking any questions. The workload itself was very manageable. We were also given a group project within the first week to be presented to Partners mid-way through the internship. I found this to be a great opportunity to work with other interns and build connections.
Skills
Throughout the internship I feel that I have developed a variety of skills. I have developed my time management skills and balancing different expectations, particularly during the first week when I was receiving work from my department and also working on the group presentation. I have significantly developed my confidence as everyone at DLA has been so supportive and kind during my internship. Everyone has been willing to answer any questions I might have or have a chat and give me work, even senior partners. I felt I have worked with a variety of people at different levels throughout the firm and been given feedback that will help me develop throughout my career.
Business Insight
What I learnt about DLA is that it is the place of opportunity. As they are a huge law firm with offices across the world and with a variety of roles available, I feel that there is the opportunity to tailor your career to your interests and personal goals over time. Furthermore, there is a big focus on well-being and healthy work/life balance which means that whilst you may be busy at points and getting stuck in with work, everyone is very supportive to ensure that your career has longevity.
Culture
I have found the culture at DLA to be very supportive and positive with a team focused attitude. People from across the business are very down to earth. There is also a drive to innovate and be successful across all departments of the business which is very motivating. Overall, the general atmosphere was one where people seemed genuinely happy and positive, even in busy periods as there is support across teams.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed the insight. The work I have been given has been varied and very interesting. My line manager has been very supportive along with the rest of the team which has really boosted my confidence. The networking opportunities and particularly the London induction was by far the most incredible experience of my career so far. There is a very supportive culture amongst the intern cohort as well which has been great.
Yes
The advice I would give is to be really enthusiastic but also be yourself and have confidence in your ability. DLA are looking for a variety of people with different strengths. Throughout the application process, tailor your experiences/interests to the firm and really try to immerse yourself in what they do. Be a good team player and be approachable to everyone you meet.
