Overview
This role was split across two sub-teams within the immigration team. One team supports with visa applications for potential employees joining the firm who need a visa to work in the UK and the other team supports visa extensions and switches for employees who are already with the firm. On a day-to-day basis, I would manage any queries that came into the shared inboxes that I was responsible for and also carry out Right to Work checks.
Skills
I was able to develop my tech skills, especially with the rise of AI in the firm and was able to trial new technology that was launched internally in the firm.
Responsibilities
I felt like a valued and permanent member of the team, I was treated the same as everyone else and my role held a lot of responsibility. My contributions and opinions were taken into account which made me feel as though I had an impact on the team and how they moved forward.
Support & Guidance
For the first couple of weeks, I was being greatly aided by my predecessor who was still in the team which meant I could ask him any questions I had and trial out my tasks with his support. Once he left, I was still given a lot of guidance from my career coach and other people in the team and could always go to someone with queries.
Culture
The company culture was very dynamic and collaborative. People were encouraged to try new things and put themselves out there in order to learn different tasks. It was a very friendly and warm environment, especially amongst people who were a similar grade to me. The level of expertise held by people in the team was also really inspiring and helpful.
Your Impressions
I greatly enjoyed my placement and felt that I have learnt a lot of valuable skills, both industry-specific and soft skills which will help me in my future career. The team were a big highlight and made my experience so much fun and enjoyable.
