Overview
Everyday I'd be directly involved in client matters, gaining a real insight into what a trainee does. I completed a range of tasks from 9am to about 5pm, including but not limited to research, proofreading, document review, drafting emails, drafting letters and taking notes in client meetings. There were occasionally training sessions and other events in the office, such as lunch meetings put on by DLA Piper's affinity inclusion networks.
Skills
So many! In particular I have honed my skills in legal document analysis and understanding different types of legal documents in formats I was less familiar with.
Business Insight
The three-day London induction session was particularly useful for an insight into DLA Piper's business strategy and various roles. We heard from lawyers at every level, as well as a wide range of non-solicitor employees at the firm, such as access and inclusion professionals. After this induction I felt well equipped to start working on the internship with the context to really understand the business as I did.
Culture
Fantastic. Everyone was so kind and helpful. Many firms talk about having a welcoming and inclusion-based culture, but DLA Piper really works to cultivate a collaborative environment.
Your Impressions
Very much. The nature of the programme being 3.5 weeks allowed us to understand the firm and gain real, useful experience.
Yes
Think about the firm's 4 main values. Do you see yourself aligning with them well? They guide a lot of what the firm does, so they are useful to use as a context for your application process.
