    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The vacation scheme was an exciting and fulfilling 3 weeks. On top of the 2 supervisors I shared an office with, and the trainee buddies and teams I sat with, there were many events organized by the graduate recruitment team. These included diversity panels, pro bono talks, corporate case studies, and partner networking. It was the most I have learned in a short amount of time, feeling truly immersed in the firm. I participated in calls with welcoming partners, completed tasks for associates who valued my contributions, and assisted my supervisor with business development, pro bono, and high-profile matters.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the vacation scheme, I developed several important skills. Commercial awareness became more than just a checkbox for an assessment center; it had real on-the-job applications that added value to my work and, by extension, my contribution to the firm. In legal drafting, I worked on a client note and a research memo, which acquainted me with HSF House Style drafting and emphasized the importance of conciseness. Additionally, I honed my teamwork skills through a new team pitch task. This activity involved collaborating with a group of 5-7 peers to pitch to a banking panel about the law firm, where teamwork and mutual support were essential. Working across two different groups required cooperation, organization, and effective teamwork.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Herbert Smith Freehills
  • For those applying to Herbert Smith Freehills, I recommend to research the firm thoroughly, understand the firm’s practice areas, values, and recent high-profile cases. This will help you tailor your application and show genuine interest. Additionally, demonstrating commercial awareness in highlighting how legal issues intersect with business interests of the firm and its clients is key. But it is also important to be yourself. The firm values authenticity- let your personality shine through in your application and interviews. It is also helpful to emphasize experiences where you’ve worked effectively in a team, the best way is to use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. Attending firm events, webinars, interacting with your university’s Campus Ambassador and networking with current employees will help you deeper insights into the firm’s culture and expectations. Lastly, staying organized and managing time well is key in and outside the scheme. Balancing multiple tasks and deadlines is key, so demonstrate your ability to manage time effectively.
