Overview
Day-to-day involved interacting with others on the scheme, building connections with others that shared similar career aspirations. It also involved sat in a designated department (for me, this was pensions), assisting an associate with tasks, and providing support on other tasks for partners and trainees. This could be anything from basic grammar and spelling checks to responding to pension complaints. I also participated in tasks, such as planning a fundraiser for a charity challenge event.
Skills
Absolutely. I have learnt a great deal about domestic pension law in the UK, as well as the international scope at which the firm operates, not just in relation to pensions, but in relation to corporate law more generally. The training provided also allowed me to develop more refined, practical law skills, such as in drafting documents, and in feeling more comfortable around complex legal frameworks and language. I have also had the ability to greatly develop and enhance my social networking skills, and now feel much more comfortable about connecting with others, whether that be those within the firm, or others generally speaking.
Business Insight
Very good. The firm allowed for fantastic insights into its business practices, global scope and potential roles.
Culture
Really good. The firm was extremely welcoming, and went to great lengths to make the cohort feel as though they were a part of what was happening at A&O Shearman. This was especially noticeable in the early recruitment team, who did a great job of organising everything, and providing an enjoyable, entertaining and welcoming atmosphere. However, it was also the same for the partners and the associates (especially in pensions!) who were happy to interact, and to help with any work that was coming up.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed gaining an insight into the firm and the work that was going on. I have never really done anything law related before, so this was a first for me but i left feeling knowledgeable and much more career focussed, with a drive to pursue law seriously. The firm was very open about the work they were doing and how they go about this work, allowing for inclusivity
Yes
A&O Shearman is a really great, open and welcoming firm, so make sure to give everything to the application! However, when applying, don't try and be someone that you are not- make the application as true to yourself as possible, as the firm is extremely inclusive to everyone, and pushes you to be yourself at every step.
