The Role
The work was varied and interesting but, due I suppose to the placement only being two weeks long, I sometimes had a shortage of work to do and couldn't really get involved too much in one particular case or project since I would be leaving soon. There were various activities organised for the students on the placement - from presentations from different practice areas to nights out with the current trainees. The firm was obviously as keen to impress us as we were to impress them.
Everyone was incredibly friendly. I never felt like there was any kind of hierarchy and I was made to feel very welcomed. I was also not afraid to ask questions and work I did for others was always well appreciated.
My main fountain of support and guidance was my trainee supervisor who I could go to with any queries and who would explain tasks to me and help me carry them out.
Not incredibly busy - at times I struggled to find work to do - but the aim of the placement was principally to give me an insight into the firm and an idea of what life might be like as a trainee which it succeeded in doing.
Not a great deal. I suppose I was responsible for time-managing my own work and for making sure certain important court documents were in the correct order etc. Like I said, with the placement being so short it was unlikely that I could have been given much more work or responsibility.
Doing a placement at a commercial law firm has given me a far greater understanding of practicing commercial law and of putting the theory you study at university into practice. The case studies and group exercises we did have hopefully improved my presentation and team-working skills. The legal skills I have learnt will undoutedley assist me in my future career.
The Company
Quiet! Everyone was very professional but at the same time you never felt like you couldn't ask for help. The entirely open-plan offices meant there was no emphasis on hierarchy (partners would sit besides trainees) and hot-desking allowed you to sit with different people and in different departments.
Extremely well organised. There was a good balance between social events, presentations from other departments and doing work in your own department.
The firm made serious efforts to give as an insight into its work, different departments, structure and ethos - evidently with an aim of potentially hiring us on graduation.
National Travel
Very appealing. They have an excellent reputation, offer a great traineeship and have values which reflect my own.
The Culture
My fellow placement students and I got on excellently and nights out organised by the trainees were really good fun.
I stayed in my home city so accommodation was already provided for and socialising events were paid for by the firm.
Brilliant.
Due to the shortness of the placement, not many.
