Overview
Spend time meeting with peers and working on projects to support AstraZeneca's development pipeline. Opportunity to focus on multiple projects that look at investigating novel modelling frameworks and seeing their use within AstraZeneca. Had the chance to present work to multiple groups of people and attend multiple networking events and seminars.
Skills
Yes, working at AstraZeneca has given me the perfect environment to apply the things I have learned at university in a totally new and exciting environment. I have strengthened both my mathematical knowledge and confidence in applying it. Furthermore, I have also had a great chance to develop confidence in my communication with peers and gain increased resilience and time management through general exposure to working life.
Responsibilities
I was given the responsibility of managing my own time and the freedom to tackle problems independently, but I was always encouraged to reach out for support from my team when necessary.
Support & Guidance
Mostly weekly meetings with my supervisor to discuss science and ensure my work is going in the right direction and a very open team that's always willing to share knowledge or support me whenever possible and necessary
Culture
Mainly comforting working environment with multiple recourse groups that account for different communities to help with representation and build a sense of community.
Your Impressions
I feel very lucky to have carried out a placement at AstraZeneca and feel it has given me the opportunity to both develop myself and create a better idea of what I'd like to get out of my future as well as have great life experiences that I may not have had at other placements. The location in Cambridge has made this placement an excellent place to spend a year and working in such a large company has given me great opportunities to network
Yes
Coming from a non-science background I was definitely nervous about coming to AstraZeneca with little experience in biology and chemistry. If anyone applying is in that same situation I would offer them reassurance that there are no expectations for them to know anything before starting their placement. Working at AZ gives the opportunity to apply knowledge developed at university to something totally new and you are given a great platform to develop understanding of any science relevant to projects you are working on.
