Overview
The internship involved carrying out tasks that you can be expected to undertake as a trainee within the firm. Examples of said tasks include: - Drafting - Research - Proof reading - Analysing and condensing information in a more readily digestible format It also involved getting to know different individuals within the business, their journey and what they currently do.
Skills
One major skill I have improved is relationship, during the internship the importance and value of maintaining a relationship both within the business and externally has become more apparent. In addition, I have been able to ask several questions that has allowed me to improve on my analytical skills, to determine and interpret what a document or contract states.
Business Insight
DLA Piper as a business firm has been vocal about this but also it is evident in their day to day activities. All members of the firm have been helpful in breaking down the elements required for the business to thrive as well as what is required from its employees. One key element that stood out to me was the firms commitment to supporting the development and career progression of its employees, a true growth mindset.
Culture
The atmosphere has been very warm and welcoming. It is evident from all members of the firm across the different departments. I found individuals in the business ready to assist and to impact their knowledge (if the time permits). The company prides itself in its collaborative nature, not just within the London office but across all offices in England, Wales, and Ireland - as well as globally.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed every single moment at the firm from speaking to the business support members to trainees and office managing partner. The past few weeks has given me a range of activities and collaborative opportunities to work with my colleagues in presenting our findings on a clients (fictitious) issues and potential advice to the client - encapsulating what I can expect to undertake as a trainee.
Yes
The generic yet true advice is it be oneself. During my time here, I have been able to witness the acceptance of several diverse individuals who bring different inputs to the business - show that diversity in your application. In addition, it is paramount to be inquisitive. If you are able to demonstrate a keen and willing nature to learn and grow as well as the determination and drive, this will set applicants apart from others.
