Overview
The first 3 days was an induction in the London office for all interns in the UK and Ireland, and formed of a series of talks and networking opportunities. After the induction, you were based in the office you applied to, and you spent 2 weeks in 1 team, followed by the final week in another team. There were opportunities to network throughout the internship, and some socials were organised on an evening too.
Skills
Tasks involved things like sitting in on client calls and taking notes, proof reading exercises, and various drafting tasks that were specific to the team that you were in. It gave you a good insight into the tasks that you would do as a trainee in that team. The tasks were particularly useful in helping to develop your attention to detail.
Business Insight
In particular, it was really useful to speak to the trainees and NQs and find out their experiences of choosing seats as a trainee, and applying for NQ roles. It was also nice that they organised an induction for the entire cohort in the London office, as it was interesting to speak to trainees and NQs from different offices, particularly since some trainees apply to NQ positions in different offices.
Culture
The culture and atmosphere at DLA was genuinely very friendly. Everyone encouraged you to make the most out of your time there, and people were very friendly and approachable. The firm's culture made it quite easy to speak to a wide range of people whilst you're there, and I felt that this helped me to make the most of my experience.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight that the internship gave me into DLA Piper. I have enjoyed learning about the different types of work that the teams that I sat with do, and the wide range of clients that they act for. I have also enjoyed meeting a wide range of people, and I feel that this experience has really helped me to make contacts that I otherwise wouldn't have made.
Yes
My advice would be to be organised and apply early, as they recruit on a rolling basis and I think thoroughly researching the firm before the application window opened really helped me to get my application in relatively quickly. Also, if you do get through to the internship, make sure to make the most out of your time there, as it's a big firm, with a wide range of opportunities.
