Overview
We were seated in the middle of our respective teams for the three week office placement, which gave us great exposure to the work that fee-earners in the firm do on a day-to-day basis. The teams were very welcoming and supportive, and encouraged us to get involved in as much as we could! Responsibilities and tasks were dependent on the team, but mostly involved research, drafting, and editing. This was an excellent way to get a better understanding of the work that the firm does, how they do it, and who they do it with.
Skills
The open-plan office really gives you an excellent opportunity to develop your communication and teamwork skills. The teams are very friendly and easy to chat with, so it is a good opportunity to learn a balance of professional and casual communication in an office environment. The work that the teams get you involved in also gives you the chance to boost writing skills.
Business Insight
It was really interesting to learn about the roles available, and specifically to have an insight into what the general day-to-day tasks and responsibilities are with the role.
Culture
The culture is very welcoming and supportive. I felt comfortable speaking with everyone in the office, regardless of seniority. The open-plan office makes a big difference in this regard. The social events run in the internship programme and general office events which were coincidentally also being run really showcased a sociable culture in the office.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight.
Yes
The internship programme is particularly useful if you do not know whether you want to pursue a career in law. You get insights into multiple areas of the firm and come out with strong foundational knowledge of how commercial firms operate. Doing the internship in a global law firm like DLA Piper also offers unparalleled opportunities to engage with a diverse group of people.
