Overview
On a day to day basis, I completed live work involving reading contracts, conducting legal research, taking minutes, reviewing documents and drafting documents. I worked in the Intellectual Property and Corporate practice groups.
Skills
I have developed my minute-taking skills, learning how to keep up with meetings and take concise notes while still covering all material points. I have also improved my face-to-face communication skills, having one-on-one conversations with many people in the office.
Business Insight
It was really easy to learn more about the business as everybody in the office was incredibly friendly and willing to talk about their roles in the firm and their pathways into law. People spoke openly about the different roles they had been in and how they had enjoyed them, and how individuals in the firm worked together.
Culture
The company culture was incredibly welcoming and it never felt uncomfortable to approach anyone, whether asking for a chat or work! The firm was dedicated to diversity and was incredibly accepting.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the insight, and it helped to certify in my mind that I would be interested in a career in commercial law. The work was varied and interesting and the people in the office were incredibly friendly and made getting settled in easy.
Yes
When you're applying, be authentic! Don't feel the need to put up a front or only talk about your legal interests in your applications - the firm has an incredibly human feel and in my application, I talked about all sorts of interests of mine unrelated to the law. Be yourself and ask lots of questions!
