Overview
There was a 3 day induction period at the start where we had talks from people across the firm and networked. After this day-to-day involved completing a range of tasks for people in your team, sitting in on meetings and speaking to people from the firm to get an idea of what they do.
Skills
I have learnt new skills that will be useful to meas a trainee: legal research, document review, legal drafting. I also developed some skills I already had such as public speaking, teamwork and case summarising.
Business Insight
The induction talks at the start made it really easy to see how the law firm functions as a business and what they aim to achieve, as well as their values. The people giving the talks were from a range of levels, so we got an idea of the different possible career paths. Spending time in the teams themselves also showed more about what the roles mean for the day to day.
Culture
DLA Piper is a very down to earth and friendly firm. Everyone working there, no matter their level, seemed keen to chat to you about what they're doing.
Your Impressions
Overall, I really enjoyed the programme. I learned a lot that I believe will help me in the future. I got to meet and work with some really great people. We also had some fun socials organised for us throughout the programme, allowing us to get to know our fellow interns better. It was certainly a very positive experience.
Yes
Make sure you read up well on the firm before, they have a lot of things about them that make them stand out from other firms and that they're proud of. Being aware of this would be useful throughout the application process.
