    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My day involves meetings with managers and other internal auditors to plan upcoming audits and discuss the scope of our work. I will then arrange meetings with client sponsors to make work arrangements and dig deeper into the processes at the company. I will make notes from these meetings and request evidence that will support our findings. Then, I will write up the controls that the client has in place and whether we found that they were compliant with these controls. This will be drafted into a report, which will need to be personalised and formatted, ready to be fed back to the client.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have significantly improved my confidence and communication skills, as I am always taking part in professional discussions with clients and colleagues, sometimes discussing complex and sensitive matters. I have also developed my ability to handle, plan and manage my workload, as I am always taking on a variety of different tasks, that require different skills. I have also developed my IT skills, such as using Excel to analyse data and draw conclusions on compliance rates.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My managers were very quick to give me responsibility for my work, however, this was only once I was ready and confident to. When I first started work, my responsibilities were to join meetings, take notes, and draft my findings. This quickly advanced into leading meetings with clients, writing up reports, and conducting my own audits. When I first started leading meetings, my managers and co-workers always ensured that there was somebody on the call to help me if there were any issues, to help build my confidence whilst giving me more responsibility.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • When I first joined the company, there were a number of online learning modules that I needed to complete. This gave me a wide overview of RSM and provided me with training on the work that we do. There have also been two in-person training events, that was specific to my role as Internal Auditor. Also, I was assigned a buddy when I first joined, and shadowed other colleagues to gain experience and provide support to me. Overall, the whole process has been incredibly supportive and has provided me with lots of training.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everybody has always been very friendly and has a good attitude. There is a hybrid working policy, meaning that most people would be in the office two days a week. This means that you are often seeing and spending time with different people in the office. We had weekly virtual meetings and quarterly meetings in the office, meaning that there was constant communication with the wider team. Overall, the culture and atmosphere has been great.
