Overview
The week was packed with presentations to learn more about the firm. Outside of that, I worked with the Banking team and was assigned multiple tasks by my trainee buddy to help me get a taste of what a Banking lawyer does. I have also had the opportuity to talk to the other people in the team and to ask questions. By the end of the week, I have had my training contract interview.
Skills
I have gained a lot of insights into the typical documents and processes that are involved when advising clients in banking. I have improved on my attention to detail, concentration and adaptability through tasks such as drafting and proofreading multiple documents. My communication skills have also improved through drafting emails and efficiently asking questions to the team.
Business Insight
I really appreciate the time and effort the team and the firm has spent to help explain to me the specifics of the firm and the technical side of the lawyer's work. As a result, I have gained more confidence and also more appreciation for the legal work.
Culture
Everyone at Gateley was so welcoming and friendly from the moment you walked through the door. I was taken aback at how comfortable everyone was in discussing ideas and bouncing off opinions of each other. The team I was in was extremely busy but they still left aside time to feedback on my work in detail which I am very grateful for.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the scheme and I can say that it is very difficult to find a law firm/business that makes you feel heard and valued as a person like Gateley!
Yes
Although this is a very cliche advice, just be yourself and relaxed, because the people at the firm are genuinely nice and supportive. Another advice would be that when you get to the assessment centre, hopefully you have done much research but do try to remember that Gateley isn't just a law firm but also a company with multiple non-legal businesses. This means that Gateley Legal would be working with the specialists more efficiently. It is a good point to bring up in your answers.
