    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked previously in corporate tax where I would produce corporate tax computations and assist in client queries. I now work in VAT where I assist on VAT advisory queries and help with the onboarding client due diligence process.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my time as a tax assistant, I have developed my public speaking / communication skills during client calls when I have taken the lead in asking queries. Also, I had the opportunity to lead team meetings which aided me in my confidence speaking to larger groups. I have also developed my organisational skills, as in my role I would have to manage my own portfolio of clients and provide regular updates to the team.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During my time in Corporate tax, I managed my own portfolio of clients and would often take the lead in providing regular updates in team meetings. However, in VAT I found this quite the opposite and would often get work off superiors and hand directly back to them.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • All staff in both teams were very supportive, my respective line managers would often check in and make me feel comfortable in the team. This also applies to the members in VAT and Corporate tax, everyone was extremely welcoming and willing to help me with any questions I had.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I loved the company culture at RSM! Everyone has such a willingness to help and ensure you understand the work you receive. There was regular socials where I could interact with my colleagues outside of the work environment which I found useful as I was able to make genuine friendships which will last after my placement ends. I also loved the approach to hybrid / flexible working, the firm was very accommodating to external commitments and would be helpful in assisting to any external issues which may affect my normal working hours.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I would say enjoyed my placement, particularly my first 6 months in Corporate tax which were really fulfilling. I was unsure if I would enjoy working in tax, but I loved my time with the Corporate tax team and felt like I worked well alongside them. My time in VAT was slightly different, I did feel like I enjoyed it less than Corporate tax, but this was due to the nature and quantity of work I received, also the difference in responsibility I had compared to CTX.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to RSM
  • I would advise that when prepping for the video interview / assessment centre, ensure you really understand the brands core values and what it means to be part of RSM. The brand here feels really significant, so I feel it is important to understand and align with it if you want to work here.
