Overview
Daily work would involve being set a project brief and then set off to gather data and analyse trends, plan live simulations, source funding/resources, professional training, CAD modelling and to conduct research across site to develop technical documentations to apply in real world solutions.
Skills
When entering a professional workplace, learning new skills is inevitable in order to thrive. As an engineer, I've been exposed to many pieces software using in the industry such as AutoCAD, Inventor, SAP, KNIME and even advanced usages of MS softwares. I've also been Health and Safety trained under our sites laws and legislations to the industry standard and specialised machine training for the steel industry. Finding the confidence to build industry level connections will prove to be beneficial throughout my career.
Responsibilities
To some extent, yes. As a placement student, my actions were always cleared by my line managers but I was given little instruction on how to proceed with tasks which led me to using my initiative and being responsible for my own deadlines. Being given access to site with drawing platforms meant I could do my own research and move forward at my own pace. I even had the opportunity to lead a group of engineers as a senior to complete new machine installation on site.
Support & Guidance
The support provided by my colleagues is immense. As a team, there is never a moment when you are stuck due to the transparent and approachable leadership. You can always ask for help and never be turned away. I was provided with much guidance when I first started out since there is a learning barrier to overcome but as time went by, I became more independent and less reliant on help but knowing that assistance is always a door knock away gave me a peace of mind.
Culture
The company has always fostered a sense of collaboration and innovation to ensure the young generation drive growth and propel the company into the future. Open communication and feedback always kept a positive and supportive atmosphere. Being surrounded by specialists in their areas meant you never have to worry about being unable to progress.
Your Impressions
Overall, I've thoroughly enjoyed my year long placement. A different pace of environment from university has opened my eyes to the opportunities available. I've been able to expand my career goals and think about the employability aspects gained from this placement. I would highly recommend taking on board a placement!
Yes
Unfortunately, the company is currently undergoing its biggest transformation in its time meaning there is a small level of uncertainty when applying for Tata Steel UK but otherwise, I again would highly recommend it. There really is no other place in the UK providing such experiences in one of the oldest industries in the world. Provide skills and prior experiences suited for the role in CV's to ensure being a stand out candidate.
