Overview
Supporting the development of superconducting magnets via testing, performing hand calculations, FEA. etc..
Skills
Learned how to perform FEA in Simcenter and Ansys (had no prior experience) Learned about modal analysis, stress calculations, analysing test results Developed my communication and teamworking (big weakness starting, still needs work)
Responsibilities
Much of the work given to me was unsupervised work where the it would only progress if I put time and effort into it. Other than that, about a third of the work involved supporting my colleagues
Support & Guidance
There was a lot of support and guidance available if I asked for it I had a slow start and struggled with asking for support towards the beginning of my placement and is still something I need to develop
Culture
Colleagues in my department have all been friendly and eager to help or provide guidance This varied with other departments and with technicians, most will provide help when asked but some can be grumpy
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the placement and if given the choice, would not have chosen to work at any other company as the work was engaging and relevant. The main negative of the placement was that I had struggled to adapt to office and British culture likely due to my lack of office work experience beforehand. It feels like my placement has been cut short and that I could have achieved much more had I been able to adapt sooner
Yes
Ask as many questions as possible all the time. Take interest How you think and solve problems is more important
