Overview
My main task was relieving pressure off of more senior members of the team. This involved completing tasks requiring less subject based skill such as admin, or sorting of data. Often my tasks revolved around the idea of adapting PY documents to suit a current year audit. In addition, I was often tasked to proof read final audit document as part of Cast and Calls. This enabled me to learn a huge amount as I was continuously exposed to new information.
Skills
The experience enabled me to both develop my technical skills and my interpersonal skills. Going into the office enabled constant exposure to a real working environment which requires quick adjustment, enabling a steep learning curve. The collaborative nature also forced me to lean into developing my professional conversational skills alongside learning the value of teamwork and related ideas. Technically, exposure to financial documents enabled me to learn a lot of terminology. With the help of people sitting next to me, I was able to greater understand these financial concepts.
Business Insight
There is great transparency around the business structure, enabling you to well understand the paths you may take within your career in Deloitte. They do not encourage transfer between subject areas within the vacation scheme or thereafter, which is unfortunate. This doesn't end up being that unfortunate due to shared office spaces and connections you are encouraged to make with those on different teams. There is constant reinforcement of company values which maintains clarity of what Deloitte feels is important within their workspace.
Culture
Very good. I cannot speak for all offices, as I know my office is extremely proud of maintaining such a good working environment. But it is clear to me that people actually have a strong desire to work here and really believe in what the working culture has to offer. This is exemplified in a mass of activities ran by the office and by the wider company to promote wellbeing and to connect networks of people.
Your Impressions
The insight was very valuable to me. The amount of knowledge I was able to pick up in such a short time will be important to me for the rest of my career. This enabled me to maintain a sense of purpose throughout the scheme, even when work became heavy. It was also nice to have my first introduction into a professional environment, and I think Deloitte does that extremely well. I would do it again.
Yes
Apply as you would anywhere else. The values Deloitte hold are pretty consistent with values maintained within most professional companies, so use them. At all times prioritise what you can offer in terms of softs skills, and how nice you would be to work with as a person.
