    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • the role was in railway civils, involving alot of level crossing related work in the Sheffield office. This involved creating presentations/ reports/ spreadsheet analysis to present to clients. Also involved designs and drawing work on stations and lineisde civils and level crossings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learnt many new excel and word related skills. Work wise i learnt about a whole new area of how decison makings whether to invest to level crossings are worth it or not using benfit cost ratio methods

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes to prepare presentations and reports mainly, although final decisions were made higher up or by parties beyond control. my presentation were used to present to clients and my report was the vast basis of a large chunk of work sent to East West Rail- a major client.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A good amount, particularly when was guided through how to create design calculation sheets on excel. Support was on hand to answer queries/ have discussions wit and talk ideas through and recieve feedback.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is good and there are many schemes and processes in place to support employees and keep updated. The general atmosphere varied based on the work from home to in office ratio on various days so could sometimes be quite within the team.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my work on the placement and had a good work life balance and felt comfortable. I didnt enjoy too much the varied WFM/ office balance of staff members and maybe took longer to build bonds with team members than otherwise however didnt comprise these bonds once established.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald
  • Ask questions about the type of work your liekly to get as there are so many different areas of work even within the same teams which varies across the different offices. i.e sheffield focused mainly on level crossings whereas bhm seemed to get a different focus of work around stations and Hs2 for emample.
