    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role is very varied, you could be doing some physical work racking and stacking network hardware one day, and the next day you could be using python automation to login to 1000's of devices to search for something that you want to remove from the network. You could be tracing cables one day and the next day liaising with different teams to move a project along. No two days are exactly the same.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot or honed lots of technical skills such as Network Engineering, Python, Linux, and more. My soft skills were also developed during the internship as you are consistently pushed to improve.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • You are given far more responsibility than you would probably first think in an intern role. You will be trusted to do things and then given a long leash to go and figure out how to do them. Ultimately its up to you to go and work out the best way to action the work you've been given, you are provided with guidance throughout.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture is sublime, the office is a very relaxed atmosphere with great banter. People go out after work or on weekends often together and there are different events every few months, some of which work will pay for such as team connect events or events for new hires.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Cisco
  • 1. Make sure your CV is pristine, free from errors and your technical skills are somewhere easily seen at a quick glance when first viewing. You don't need to have everything the job description is asking for but you do need to show at least a level of competency or interest in some. 2. Prepare for your interviews, you can go on Youtube and look for 'CareerVidz' channel and use that to prepare for the more soft skill/HR type questions. As for the technical questions you just need to have put the work in during university to pass those. 3. If you make it to the interview stage and get asked a question you don't know the answer too, just say you don't know but you'll look it up and get back to them. Don't waffle and try come up with something. 4. Just be yourself honestly, the technical requirements for an Intern aren't that high but they are looking for the right 'fit', Cisco is more about hiring the right person not the most technical person.
