Overview
My role at MBDA involved researching and implementing machine learning solutions, primarily focused on domain generalization and IR ship segmentation. Daily activities included reading scientific literature, coding in Python and PyTorch, debugging, conducting performance evaluations, and integrating models into Simulink test harnesses. I also attended technical presentations, participated in Agile meetings, and presented findings to the department.
Skills
Yes, I developed my machine learning skills, particularly in domain generalization and IR ship segmentation using Python and PyTorch. I enhanced my understanding of Agile methodology and improved my presentation and public speaking skills. Additionally, I gained experience with Simulink, Unity for synthetic data generation, and various evaluation metrics. My teamwork and communication abilities also improved through collaborative projects and departmental presentations.
Responsibilities
I attended meetings and was part of the team like everyone else, but I had very limited to no responsibilities. My role mainly focused on learning and supporting ongoing projects rather than leading tasks or making significant decisions.
Support & Guidance
I received considerable support and guidance during my placement. The buddy scheme was particularly helpful for addressing initial concerns and first-day logistics. Weekly chats with other undergraduates and graduates provided a continuous support network, facilitating the exchange of ideas and advice. Additionally, regular meetings with my supervisor in the first half of my placement ensured I received feedback and direction throughout my project.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere at MBDA were relaxed and supportive. The work culture emphasized collaboration and continuous learning, with plenty of assistance from friendly and helpful colleagues. There were regular social events that fostered a strong sense of community and made the workplace enjoyable.
Your Impressions
While I gained valuable experience in AI and insight into the defense industry during my placement, the overall organization of the undergraduate scheme in my department seemed rather disorganized, especially compared to other departments. The work at times felt lacking in meaningful impact and fulfillment, and the first half of my placement was difficult at times as I was put on an independent project and therefore felt isolated from the rest of the department, even sitting in a different area of the office. I wasn't asked to return to the company, but I also rarely received any feedback, let alone negative feedback, with formal objectives provided months into the placement. On the positive side, the team was incredibly helpful and welcoming, making it easier to settle in and work collaboratively, and the company itself has a great culture and is a very good place to work.
Yes
I would advise others applying to MBDA to proactively seek feedback and clarify objectives early on to ensure a more structured experience. Take advantage of networking opportunities and engage with different departments to gain a broader understanding of the company. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the Agile methodology and be prepared to work both independently and as part of a team. Lastly, be proactive in seeking meaningful projects that align with your career goals.
