Overview
On a day-to-day basis, as part of the IT audit team, I worked with various engagement teams to assist the IT audit process for various clients. The work involved performing control testing, writing emails, attending calls and writing up important documentation that formed part of the audit process. The placement was a social one, with daily interaction with other summer vacation scheme students, as well as employees within the IT audit team (and within assigned engagement teams).
Skills
I've certainly developed a variety of skills from my placement - particularly when it has come to business etiquette and time management skills. I've also developed my ability to work with excel. More specifically for the role, I have learnt so much about audit and the role of an IT auditor, practicing the usage of many of the tools that IT auditors are expected to use. It's also been great for developing interpersonal and networking skills, as everyone on the team has been really friendly, and there have been many opportunities to network.
Business Insight
The placement has been really great at allowing me to get a great sense of what the business is all about. I've learnt so much about the audit process, and have specifically learnt so much about how IT auditors support this process. The hierarchical mentorship system, consisting of buddies and people leaders, has been incredibly supportive - answering any questions I had about the business in great detail. They've also allowed me to get a greater sense of what the potential roles within the company look like, and how progression between them works.
Culture
The company culture far exceeded my (already high) expectations. The office atmosphere is so friendly, with the IT auditing team being very welcoming, and always willing to assist me. The company culture is clearly one built on respect, and it has been such a positive experience to be immersed within it for the last four weeks.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed the entire placement. Training sessions throughout the summer vacation scheme allowed me to learn all about how various skills might be applied to the role, and all of these were informative and enjoyable. Whilst I was supported throughout the process, I nonetheless felt intellectually challenged, which made the work I completed interesting and enjoyable. I also enjoyed networking with the rest of the team, as everyone within the team and the wider company were very friendly.
Yes
Whilst Deloitte clearly values an attention to detail and business acumen, I think the best thing to showcase when applying to Deloitte is your willingness to be curious, and ask questions. We were always told that no question is a silly question, and it really is true. I also think that demonstrating your communication skills is key, demonstrating that you are able to work efficiently within a team - as this is key for the engagements you will end up working on.
